Carol and I have lived in Sedona since 2005. We both were born and raised in Southern California. I come from a family of ten, Mom and Dad, plus two brothers and five sisters. With this many in the family I learned early what the value of a dollar is. Neither of my parents graduated high school, but they taught us early what the value of a college degree means. All eight kids possess college degrees. You may have seen me driving around in my Red Dodge Pickup truck with the license plate CSULB 75, which means California State University Long Beach, graduating in 1975. My work history is primarily in private business starting as a janitor for Snappy Taco, advancing to my last position in California as Director of Manufacturing Accounting for Conagra Grocery Group with five billion in sales, a division of ConAgra Food with sales of twenty-five billion.
I began my association with the City of Sedona as a member of the Budget Oversight Commission under the direction of previous mayor Rob Adams. I was able to leverage my financial background to the city budgets that were presented annually to the group. This group made a number of recommendations that I believe placed the city in a stronger financial position coming out of the Great Recession.
I served on Sedona City Council from 2012 to 2020. The last six years as Vice Mayor. I sincerely believe our council made a difference in the financial and quality of life for the residents of Sedona. Especially with the partnership of the businesses to pass a half cent bed tax on hoteliers to promote Sedona in generating revenue that was needed coming out of the Great Recession.
I am also proud to be involved in several local Non-Profit organizations, which are Sedona Symphony, Sedona Public Library, SAVCO (Sedona Area Veterans Community Outreach (Flags on 89A), and a Founding Member of the Coalition Against Human Trafficking.
It began several years ago when several business owners, community leaders and residents asked me to run because in their view the Beautiful City of Sedona was fractured, it was perpetuated that our visitors were uncaring, and businesses did not care.
I believe you are entitled to a government no larger than necessary, fiscally accountable and solvent. You cannot run a city like a business, but you can run it in a businesslike manner. Projects should show a return on investment. I believe in the voice of every citizen and a place for every citizen to volunteer or be involved in some way. I will listen and represent you with fairness and balance. I believe the city and the citizenry can benefit from understanding each other better. And I am looking for more ways to facilitate that communication enhancement.
It must be brought to everyone’s attention that the Mayor has only one vote and if we hope to make positive changes I need other candidates that recognize the need for change. Therefore, I am supporting Mike Ward for City Council.
